The Best Laid Plans

If you've been following along here and have seen some of my Update notes, you'll know that I had intended to have all the episodes for the first three seasons completed before "Small Victories" aired on Showtime.

Well, obviously I've missed that deadline. Though I've completed the reviews for the last eight episodes, I just haven't had the time to write them all up yet. Dragon*Con kept me very busy from June 29-July 2. It was a ton of fun again this year, but I definitely was pooped out at the end of four 12-hour plus days.

I'm also still missing two episodes on tape: first season's "Cor-ai" and third season's "Rules of Engagement." Those two will have to wait awhile longer, until I find a kindly tape angel to help out. *grin*

That said, be assured that I will be as caught up as I can be within the next week. (I really mean it this time!) There will still be new S4 episodes to do, but having everything else done will allow me to spend time on my next big project--entering all those wonderful nitpicks you've submitted into a database and making them available online.

I'm currently teaching myself PHP/MySQL, with the goal of creating a 'Guild' database of nitpicks that can be browsed or queried by episode, classification, author, etc. It'll be a while yet before I get all the kinks worked out, but keep your eyes open for an announcement when it goes live. Hopefully, it'll be a great resource for everyone.

The Book Nook

We haven't had any archaeology/anthropology titles in a while, so this month I'm adding two more. Both are beautiful books with interesting text and plenty of wonderful pictures and illustrations.

  • The Seventy Wonders of the Ancient World by Chris Scarre (Ed.) (July 2000)

Most everyone has heard of the "seven wonders of the ancient world" (even if they can't name them all). This book expands on that idea to identify many more great monuments and achievements not restricted to the eastern Mediterranean area. It's truly a delightful reference.

    Thames & Hudson / ISBN 0500281831

  • What Life Was Like on the Banks of the Nile by Denise Dersin (Ed.) (July 2000)

Time-Life Books has done a whole series of "What Life Was Like" books, all of which are well-researched but not designed as technical references. Each volume attempts to give the readers the view of the "common" man or woman in that era, since so many historical texts concentrate on leaders and great events. This one, of course, may be of particular interest to SG-1 fans.
