What's In a Name?

What's in a name? Sometimes nothing much, sometimes a lot. Sometimes, what's in a name is the potential for conflicts over intellectual property rights, copyright and trademark infringement. *grin*

Thus, in order to avoid any future problems, the NPG has been renamed as the NNG, or "The Nitpicker's NetGuide to Stargate SG-1." This is just a temporary stopping point, however, as I search for a name that really captures the full scope of the site.

I've also been planning on doing a little redesign of the look and feel, possibly including:

  • New color palette
  • New logo (based on new name, obviously)
  • New navigation elements (graphical with rollovers?)
  • New tag lines and other messaging
  • New domain name

The overall structure of the site will remain the same--this just gives me a chance to update a bit, with the name thing as the impetus at this point.

So, be on the lookout over the next month or so for these changes. And if you've got suggestions for the new name, feel free to drop me a line. If you're the first to send in a name that I use, you'll get a credit on site as long as it bears that name.

Oh--and on the database thing--I've hit a few snags with my hosting service, which I'm trying to work through. I'm still hoping to get that up this month too, but please bear with me. Be assured your submissions are still safe, and we'll have them out for everyone to see as soon as possible.

The Book Nook

As roleplaying guidebooks go, the GURPS series are pretty darn good. This month I spotlight two volumes of subject-specific material for runnning RPG campaigns: material that could easily be used for help with fan fiction, or just for casual reading. Although these are not true 'reference' books, they do contain pretty good reference lists for folks who really want to be sure of their facts. Plus, they're fun. :)

  • GURPS Egypt: Tombs, Temples, Trouble by Thomas M. Kane et. al. (August 2000)

This guidebook provides a lot of great material on running a roleplaying campaign in Egypt. But it is also very interesting to read in its own right, with a nice layout and look-and-feel. A nice quick reference for ideas or to figure out what aspect of Egyptology you'd like to explore further.

  • GURPS Religion: Gods, Priestly Powers and Cosmic Truths by Janet Naylor et. al. (August 2000)

This guidebook, though originally designed to provide material for creating your own religions for use in roleplaying, is quite interesting in general. Plus, the principles discussed would probably be a great resource for fan fiction authors or anyone who just wants to explore the concept of religion in the Stargate universe.
