Version 2.0

Overview

Six months in the making... through perils untold and hardships unmeasured.... (Oh, wait, wrong reference) ...through extensive travel, holidays, and even back surgery, we bring you this Re-launch/Re-vision/Re-novation of the Nitpicker's NetGuide, now Re-born as (Da da da DUM)...

SG1Web: Nitpicker's NetGuide — A Stargate SG-1 Fan Resource

Ok, enough silliness. What's really happened in Version 2.0?

  • The entire site is now written in PHP, which allows separation of the content from the presentation format, reuse of code in various places, and all sorts of other nifty tricks. Bottom line: a more efficient presentation with plenty of room to grow in functionality.

  • The core information is stored in a normalized MySQL database, which means that many of the pages can now be dynamically generated, ensuring that they are always as up to date as possible. In addition, information can now be cross-linked in many ways, and members will soon be able to create custom queries of the database.

  • The site has a new look-and-feel, much more graphical in nature, to spice things up a bit. The site will load a little more slowly as a result, but hopefully not so much as to bother anyone. (Members will soon have the option to view a text-only version if they prefer.)

  • The site has been moved off the 'sublet' space on Vortxweb to its own space on Webpipe, which has been much more consistent in uptime, speed, and general quality during the period of site redesign and testing.

  • And, perhaps most obviously, the site has a new, dedicated URL (sg1web.com) to go with the new name and branding, which should be easier to remember and to type!

There's still plenty to do, however. The Members area is under construction (though a good chunk of the core coding is complete). There are still areas that can be converted from static to database-driven, to improve efficiency even further. And, of course, there's plenty of true content forthcoming, including the rest of the Season Four episode reviews, addition of all submitted nitpicks to the database, new articles, and more.

So welcome to the new version of the NNG. I hope you'll like what you see now and going forward!

Very minor edit today — updated the Web Rings page with the new Yahoo! code. BLECH. If anyone starts rings for MS, AT, or CJ somewhere outside Yahoo!, please let me know so that I can switch. Thanks.

New Editor's Note - Copyright, Plagiarism, and the World Wide Web

Two new fiction Book Nook entries.

Added episode analyses (included -isms and 911 entries) for:

Added Season Five page with what little is known to date about episode titles for the start of the season.

Added the Nitpicking 101 article, which describes nitpick theory, categories, and submission process.

Updated entries for Apophis and Cronos in the Pantheon.

Added Addresses for Euronda and for Tollana.

Various updates and edits to the Web Links and Discussions pages. The Web Rings page still needs work as I try to determine which rings have moved where in the wake of the Yahoo! purchase of WebRing.

Added a Privacy page listing the SG1Web privacy policy.

Added links in the left navigation for voting at Stargate-related Topsiteslists, as well as a link to view a printer-friendly version of any page (will open in a new window).
